3 Signs It Is Time to Take Your Accounting Career to Next Level

When you came out of college, brandishing a newly minted accounting degree, you were just happy to land a job. Now, it’s time to do more than just get by. You need to consider how to take your accounting career to the next level.

But when should you make your big move? It’s a complicated question. You don’t want to jeopardize your current position. At the same time, you also don’t want to get stuck in a dead-end situation.

Judging when to hit the gas on your professional development can prove challenging. But there are signals to consider. Here are a few signs it’s time to take your accounting career to the next level:

3 Signs You Are Ready for The Next Step in Your Accounting Career!

You’re Not Excited about Going to Work

Think about your mornings and weekends. Do you look forward to getting back to work? Does your brain run over projects and consider what you need to get done? Or does your emotional involvement go the other way? Instead, do you dread getting back to the office?

If you no longer get excited about your job, it could point to a longer-term problem.

Sure, everyone goes through the occasional funk. Few people skip into work on a daily basis, full of unending optimism and unflagging enthusiasm. A little frustration or boredom is bound to seep in occasionally.

But, generally speaking, you should feel engaged by your position. You should want to head into the office. Absent that eagerness, you should consider how to find a job that truly captures your imagination.

You’re Not Learning Anything

A great job should have two major components. You should get the opportunity to apply your existing knowledge. At the same time, you should constantly add skills and expand your information base.

Even if you have that first part covered, you should make sure the second is in force as well. An engaging job isn’t enough. You also need to stretch your comfort zone and augment your capabilities.

If you’re not adding to your skill set on a regular basis, you might get stuck. You might not notice it immediately. But down the road, you might not have the competencies necessary to push your career forward.

You Don’t See Any Room for Advancement at Your Current Company

Think of building a career like playing a game of chess. You can’t just look at the moves right in front of you. You have to look ahead to predict what you’ll need to do down the road.

Consider your current situation. What’s your path forward? Does your firm promote from within? What opportunities will it offer for you one year from now? Five years? 10 years?

If you don’t have an obvious road to advancement, you may have to consider your options.

Start by talking to your boss and to other employees. Understand the operations of your current employer. Judge your potential opportunities there.

Beyond that, start weighing your other potential choices. If your current employer doesn’t present a promising future, where can you go to broaden your horizons?
