From Rookie to Pro: Working Through the First Year in a New Job

Here are tips to help you navigate the ins and outs of the first year in a new job.

1. Learn from Your Peers

In the first year in a new job, continuous learning is key. Be open to asking questions and mastering your role. There is no such thing as a “bad” question to ask your peers. As long as you want to learn how to effectively perform your role with a company, your colleagues will likely help you out. As you ask questions and get insights from your peers, you can perform well at work and expand your skill set. You may also be able to foster relationships with your colleagues. 

2. Track Your Results

Goal-setting can help you get the most out of year one in a new role. Set goals throughout the year. With goal-setting, be realistic. Even though you may want to accomplish as much as possible from the get-go, it’s important not to look too far into the future. You can establish goals for daily, weekly, and monthly work tasks. Monitor your results, and if you don’t achieve a goal, consider why this happened. Next, you can revise your goals or set new ones to help you track your results throughout the first year in a new job. 

3. Take Care of Yourself

You may work diligently day after day. Regardless, you still need to take care of yourself, so you feel mentally and physically well enough to perform your best at work. If you need a spring reset or just want time to focus on yourself, take advantage of self-care opportunities. For example, you can use vacation days to get away from your job and revitalise your body and mind. When you return to work, you’ll feel great, to the point where you’re able to give 100% once again. 

4. Get Feedback

Thanks to employee feedback, you’ll be able to do your best, every day. Feedback fuels performance, and your manager and peers can provide you with insights you can use to work to the best of your ability. For instance, you can set up regular meetings with your manager. These meetings may allow you to discuss your performance with your manager and find ways to improve. Meanwhile, your colleagues can help you identify your work strengths and weaknesses. They may also help you discover ways to transform your weaknesses into strengths.
